Support Groups

Survivors experience many kinds of abuse. Connecting with others who are experiencing similar situations can assist survivors with moving forward. It can also be a first step in recognizing and overcoming barriers put in place by abusive peoples.

We offer different groups to help individuals heal. Our confidential group healing options allow survivors to hear different perspectives and begin to incorporate new ways of viewing themselves and their futures. As part of a group, one can:

  • Form strong connections with others
  • Identify a time and place for self-care
  • Give and receive positive feedback
  • Improve moods
  • Develop new perspectives and confidence
  • Feel empowered
  • Reduce negative thought patterns

All groups adhere to strict guidelines regarding confidentiality. Some of the Groups that New Hope Midcoast offers are:

Basic Group: An 8-week group that includes discussion, activities, education and readings. This is a closed group that includes the same people for the whole 8 weeks.

Healing Through Art: An 8-week art-based group that uses the A Window Between Worlds curriculum. Sessions include an art project and discussion.

Book Groups: A group with discussion about relevant fiction books.

Certified Domestic Violence Intervention Program: Time for Change Women’s Group, a Domestic Violence Intervention Program, is certified through the Maine Department of Corrections and geared toward women who have used violence in their intimate partner relationships but who are also survivors of abuse themselves. The group meets virtually on Wednesdays from 10:00-11:30 a.m. (though will return to in-person at some point) and charges a nominal fee. This program meets the requirements for female offenders who are required to take a Certified Domestic Violence Intervention Program as part of their court sentence or have been referred by the Department of Health and Human Services case; clients may also self-refer to the program.
